Winter Springs

WINTER SPRINGS

Noah: Daddy! Look at all of the white flowers on those trees!

Me: Buddy, these are the first signs of Spring. What’s been your favorite season so far?

Noah: Winter! Daddy, what’s your favorite season?

Me: Spring for sure!

Noah: Why?

Me: Because Spring is when dead things come to life.

Ok, a little back story: we are from Orange County, Ca where there is really no such thing as seasons. There’s summer and a cooler summer that others might call Winter but let’s be honest, it’s not Winter! The rest of the world seems to know seasons and as much as I LOVE LOVE LOVE where we’re from, there are things that I couldn’t learn living there.

We’ve lived in Nashville for about 6 months now and are loving it. Fall was actually a time where things fell. Things turned from green to red, to orange, to brown. Then things died and went dormant. WINTER: Cold. Jackets. Snow. Bare. Layers. Rain. Clouds. Moments of Sun.The only way to really get the joy of Spring time is to go through Winter. The more intense the winter the more powerful the Spring. How many times have we experienced this? Where things seemed dead or dying and winter is like Narnia in the Lion Witch and the Wardrobe: always Winter and never Christmas.

As Noah and I were driving, I began to cry a bit. Mostly with the excitement of my new life in Jesus and how Noah doesn’t really know this for himself yet. He’ll need to go through great Winters to really understand.

Remember, if you’re in a figurative Spring time that the long Winter was essential to get you to where you are today.  And if you’re in the long Winter, remember Spring’s coming! Don’t celebrate the deathly cold of Winter but the perspective it Springs!

See!, the winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come.  Song of Solomon 2:11-12
